Sister Margaret Mary
of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, OCD
(Margaret Mary Flynn)
Born: December 31,1929
Entered Carmel: 1946
Entered into Eternal Life: January 2, 2018
Sister Margaret Mary Flynn, a member of the Order of Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Carmelite Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Little Flower in Jackson, Mississippi, passed away peacefully last January 2, 2018 at the age of 88.
She was the last of the seven nuns from the Carmel of St. Joseph in Clayton, Missouri, who came to Jackson in November 1951 to establish the first and only Carmelite Monastery in the State of Mississippi.
She served her community as Prioress for multiple terms. She also served as delegate to the three National Associations of Religious Women, and was elected to and served in national offices in two of the three Associations.
As Mother Margaret to many, her deep religious devotion, her ever kind words of wisdom, and her unique sense of humor will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Her person is truly a gift to all.
We treasure in our hearts the devotedness you have for her as shown in your support of prayers, thoughtful presence during the wake and funeral rites and the comforting messages you have lovingly sent.
For us that she has left behind, we gratefully say, "Thank you for being OUR MOTHER. Thank you for every little thing that you have done that has brought countless joys in our hearts. Your own faithful and joyful witnessing of living our life in Carmel has encouraged us to do the same, always remaining open to what God wills for us especially in our day to day response to LOVE. May you now enjoy the fullness of God’s love and His Eternal embrace. "

Mo. Margaret Mary: an inspiration
I thank God for the opportunity of having served Jackson Carmel in my own little way through God's love and mercy. Its been part of my ON-GOING FORMATION as a Carmelite. I learned so much from Mother Margaret. Her virtues are edifying especially that of obedience, simplicity and humility not to mention her admirable discretion of handling difficult situations. She is witty and sensible. She would always fill-up our shortcomings especially when no one is available to feed the road men who come to our door asking for food and water. She would help in cleaning up the kitchen at the end of the day. She would always look for the sister who is not present at the table for meal. She is always ready to say "IM SORRY" whenever she has offended any one of us. She has been a faithful Carmelite daughter TO OUR HOLY MOTHER CHURCH, TO THE CARMELITE ORDER and TO JACKSON CARMEL whom she has served all her life until the end. Sister Margaret Mary, although not perfect, has been an exemplary dear sister to me who has left a mark on my heart that would help me get up in my journey as a Carmelite. She is an inspiration. Now that Im back to my home carmel in the Philippines, I pray that GOD sustains me with the same graces He gave me when HE CHOSE ME TO SERVE THE POOREST OF THE POOR IN JACKSON MISSISSIPPI. MAY GOD BE PRAISED NOW AND FOREVER.
